For the fifth year in a row, the Holland College Hurricanes are ACAA Men’s Basketball Champions. The defending champion Hurricanes held off the surging Mount Allison Mounties 81-70 in an exciting ACAA championship game played before more than 800 fans at Mount Allison’s McCormack Gymnaisum.
After a quick start by the Mounties, Holland grabbed a slight advantage, taking a 20-17 lead into the 1st quarter break. The teams stayed even through the 2nd quarter and by halftime the Holland lead stood at 1 point, 37-36. Holland built a cushion in the 3rd quarter and headed into the 4th quarter with a 65-49 lead. The Mounties would energize the home crowd in the 4th quarter as they pushed to within 7 points but it wasn’t enough as Holland completed the 81-70 victory.
Abel Joseph led all Holland scorers with 17 points while All-Canadian Trenity Burdine chipped in with 15 points for the Hurricanes. ACAA All-Star Roosevelt Whyley had 11 points while Travis Adams finished the game with 10 points.
The Mounties were once again led by ACAA Rookie of the Year Thomas LeGallais who had 21 points for the Mounties on 7 of 14 shooting from the field. Senior Alex Chisholm, playing in his last game at the McCormack gymnasium, added 16 for the Mounties while senior and ACAA 2nd team All-star Bradley Fuller added 13 in his final home game.
Both teams advance to the 2017 CCAA Men’s National Basketball Championships to be played at Holland College from March 15th-18th.
