The Holland College Hurricanes are 2016-2017 ACAA Women’s Basketball Champions.
The Hurricanes, who finished the regular season in 1st place with a 17-1 record, defeated the 2nd place Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics 75-64 on Sunday’s final at Mount Allison University.
The teams played close from the opening tip-off, trading baskets and finishing tied 15-15 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Mystics grabbed the advantage in the 2nd quarter as they jumped ahead to 27-22 halftime lead. The depth of the Hurricanes team showed in the second half as they worked their way back to take a 51-49 lead as the two teams combined for more 3rd quarter points then in the whole first half combined. Holland closed the door in the 4th quarter, earning the 75-64 victory.
ACAA Player of the year Jayla Verney did most of the damage for the Hurricanes as she dropped 26 points on 7 of 12 shooting from the field. ACAA All-Star Tyleigha Nelson had 16 points to go along with 16 rebounds for the champions. Darcy Zink had 14 points to round out Holland’s top scorers.
For MSVU, ACAA All-Star Kate Gallant was the top scorer with 13 points while ACAA Defensive Player of the Year Maddy Hiscock scored 12 points in the loss. Maria Carroll also had 12 points for the Mystics.
Both the Hurricanes and the Mystics now advance to the 2017 CCAA Women’s Basketball Championships to be held at NAIT in Edmonton from March 15th-18th.
