The Mount Allison University Mounties took down the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves in straight sets to take home the 2025 ACAA championship at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement.
While the Mounties won in straight sets, every set was a close battle at one point, and both teams exhibited great play offensively and defensively, making for a great championship game.
The Mounties started the first set strong, jumping out to an early 5-1 lead. But the Seawolves wouldn't back down, going on a 5-1 run and tying the game at six. The teams traded points for a while until the Mounties took a 16-12 lead, which forced UNBSJ to take their first timeout. The timeout wouldn't help as Mount Allsions' high power offense would be too much for the Seawolves as the Mounties took the first set 25-18.
The start of the second set was all Seawolves, as they jumped out to an early 6-1 lead. But the Mounties rallied back and tied the set at six with some great blocks by Ana McCain and Erica Astephen. The Mounties offense gave them a 12-9 lead when the Seawolves called their first timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the teams traded points back and forth and UNBSJ was able to cut the lead to one at 16-15, but it didn't last long as a four-point Mounties run forced the Seawolves to call their second timeout down 20-15. The Seawolves came out of the timeout playing well, taking three of the next four points. But the Mounties lead was too much, and Mount Allison took the set 25-19.
With the Seawolves needing to win every set, they started the third set strong jumping out to a 3-0 lead. The Mounties responded and tied the set 5-5. After some great back-and-forth action between both teams, the Seawolves found themselves up 13-11 when the Mounties took their first timeout of the set. The timeout worked, as the Mounties took three of the next four points and tied the set 14-14. But, the Seawolves battled back, going on a 5-1 run and taking a four-point lead, 19-15, forcing Mount Allison to take their second timeout. The timeout was a huge momentum swing for the Mounties, as they went on a 6-1 run and took a 21-20 lead. The Seawolves were forced to take their first timeout of the set. With their championship hopes on the line, the Seawolves went on a 3-1 run, taking a 23-22 lead. But the Mounties answered back, getting the next two points and taking a 24-23 lead forcing the Seawolves to call their final timeout. It worked, as the Seawolves tied the game at 24.
But the Mounties were simply too much, and they won the next two points to take the third and final set 26-24 and claim the 2025 ACAA Championship in straight sets.
Astephen was awarded Mounties Player of the Game Honours after recording eight kills, three service aces, and one dig. Logan Tait led with 27 assists and 12 digs.
Amy Carey earned Player of the Game Honours for the Seawolves after recording 23 assists and six digs. Dominique Gendron led with nine kills and 12 digs.
The Mounties will represent the ACAA in the 2025 CCAA women's Volleyball championship which takes place on March 3-8, in Oshawa Ontario.
