In a matchup befitting the intensity of a crosstown rivalry, the Mount St. Vincent University Mystics made an early goal stand up, defeating the University of King's College Blue Devils 1-0 in a tightly-contested semifinal at the ACAA Women's Soccer Championship.
Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Conference member Kayley Clair provided the offense for the Mystics, while Kari Waller withstood a late rally from the Blue Devils to preserve the clean sheet.
A pair of Second Team All-Conference players took Player of the Game honours, with Emily Lush earning the award for the Mystics and Kennedy MacKill taking it home for the Blue Devils.
The Mystics established their presence on the pitch early, controlling the tempo in the opening 20 minutes and creating opportunities, though they were unable to solve First Team All-Conference keeper Rebecca Florean. Mount St. Vincent was eventually rewarded for its persistence in the 21st minute, as Player of the Year Annika Munroe broke down the right side and fed Clair in front of the net, and she made no mistake to put the Mystics up to stay.
The Mystics had opportunities to extend their lead in the second half, but Florean made a number of key stops at the other end to keep the Blue Devils in the match, and though the Blue Devils were able to gain more momentum in the latter stages of the match, they were ultimately unable to solve Waller.
Standing between the Mystics and the ACAA Championship are the Holland College Hurricanes, who defeated the UNB-Saint John Seawolves 4-1 in the other semifinal. The championship match will be played at Wickwire Field on Sunday att 11:30 a.m., broadcast live on ACAA.tv.
